Beware of Lawless Men
by Woody Brison

This is one leaf of a review of "Inside Mormonism: What Mormons Really Believe" by Isaiah Bennett

Bennett's statement: Why I have written this book is best summed up by Peter: "You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability" (2 Pet. 3:17, RSV).

This passage warns against lawless men. Clearly, that's not us. Mormons are simply not lawless people. It's in our most elementary Articles of Faith, item 12. ‒→

Maybe the argument could be rescued by appeal to other Bible translations? There, instead of lawless men, we find wicked men, or impious, or unwise, or bad, or unprincipled, or sinful, or evil, or loose-talking, or abominable, or libertine, depending on the translation. Still doesn't work; Mormons aren't any of that.

The Greek is athesmon, which I believe means 'not upright'. Still doesn't describe the Mormons. Articles of Faith, item 13. ‒→

Once again, there's no charter in the Bible for what Bennett is doing here.
Articles of Faith 12) We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

Thank God for Bible Gateway with its many Bible translations in many languages. I've tried to set up this link to show all their English translations of 2Peter 3:17.

Articles of Faith 13) We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul-We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
