Bennett's statement: Independently, we reached the conclusion that our "testimonies" supporting the Mormon church were no longer strong enough to maintain our membership.

It appears that Mr. Bennett did not even know what a testimony is. A person who has a testimony knows something, probably a number of things, by the power of revelation from the Holy Ghost, so powerfully that he won't deny it for any reason, not even to save his life.

Ancient christians and prophets were thrown to the lions, sawed in half, boiled in oil, etc. and died with their testimony on their lips.

The Lord will give testimony these days that the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith was a prophet, that the priesthood has been restored, that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and many other universal truths.

A person who has a strong testimony of the Restoration, and a sound understanding, would rather die than leave the church.
Acts 7:54-60) When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him [Stephen] with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
